Phoenix for Women

Straight Arrows, in partnership with Living Positive Victoria and Positive Women, have developed a workshop for women who have recently been diagnosed with HIV. 

Phoenix is for women who have been recently diagnosed or living with HIV for some time and are ready to connect in a safe and confidential environment. Meet other women living with HIV and receive the latest information from the healthcare profession on treatment, relationships, disclosure and wellbeing in a safe, confidential, supportive environment.

The workshop provides an opportunity to:

  • Meet other women living with HIV
  • Explore issues around disclosure, negotiating sex and relationships
  • Find out how to maintain your sexual health 
  • Learn about how to access HIV services and organisations
  • Latest HIV treatment information
  • Have your questions answered by HIV specialists 
  • Talk about your experience with HIV
  • Start planning for the future

HIV: What’s Changed and What’s New?

Thursday October 8th, University of Melbourne Theatre, Shepparton. A forum for people living with HIV and those working in the sector in the Hume region. 

This forum is held by Straight Arrows and Living Positive Victoria in partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health and Goulburn Valley Health. It will provide:

  • The latest information about HIV treatments and recent research
  • The opportunity to hear the stories of local people living with HIV
  • Information about the peer based services available to people living with HIV in the Hume region
  • Information on recent changes to the way services and treatments are delivered to PLHIV such as community dispensing

A wonderful selection of speakers has been arranged including keynote speaker and moderator Rowena Allen, Gender and Sexuality Commissioner; Cath Smith, Stigma Warrior and local woman living with HIV and Director of Positive Women Victoria; Suzanne Wallis, Sexual Health Nurse Practitioner at Goulburn Valley Health; Richard Keane, Director of Living Positive Victoria; and Matt Powell, Peer Support Worker at Straight Arrows. 

This will be an interactive forum with a moderated panel of guests and the opportunity for the audience to engage directly with the panellists. Light refreshments will be served.

Members’ Fun Day: Clip ‘n Climb

Take up the challenge at Clip 'n Climb Melbourne. It's the newest concept in indoor climbing, and the first of its kind in Australia. There are challenges and climbs that look like nothing you've seen before. After Clip ‘n Climb we are heading off for lunch at I Love Dumplings.

Phoenix Workshop

Saturday 18th July – Sunday 19th July

Phoenix is a free weekend workshop for heterosexual men living with HIV. The workshop provides a safe, confidential and supportive environment, to learn strategies for managing and making sense of HIV, to meet other people living with HIV and to receive the latest information from healthcare professionals. This is a joint partnership between Straight Arrows and Living Positive Victoria.

One the second Tuesday of every month the Catholic AIDS Ministry conducts a Mass for people living with HIV and those affected by HIV and AIDS at St. Francis' Church, 326 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.

To Tell or Not to Tell? Disclosing HIV to Children

Disclosure HIV in the family is a reoccurring topic. Every family's situation is different with different considerations and circumstances to weigh up. This 2-hour workshop will cover many of the relevant questions, answers and experiences that those living with HIV may have. This event on Saturday 2nd May is being run in collaboration with Living Positive Victoria and in partnership with Positive Women Victoria.

Afternoon Tea and fun activities for children and teens aged 4 to 16. Family swim passes are available for members of Straight Arrows, Living Positive Victoria and Positive Women Victoria who have families at the forum.
